What’s your favourite board game?

As kids – and when all other avenues were exhausted – we generally occupied ourselves by pulling out either Scrabble or Monopoly.
OK, so we had a few other board games tucked away – but other than something curiously labeled – Capt Cook’s Voyage to Discovery – these two perennial favourites managed to keep the boredom factor down and our mother’s nerves somewhat in tact.
Of course back in the dim dark ages prior to PS3’s, Wii, ninetendo etc – games such as Mousetrap, Ker-Plunk, Masterpiece and Cluedo (with Col. Mustard and Prof. Plum) – kept kids (generally) off the street and out of strife – temporarily at least.
So – did you have a favourite board game?
Pictionary, Scattegories, Battleship – anyone?

I HATE Monopoly. The reason is that I am sort of a weenie, and when my family plays Monopoly, they play for BLOOD! It is a very serious game with my peeps. I would intentionally lose, just to get out of the game. These Monopoly sessions would go on into the wee hours, and usually led to a fight. I like Scrabble, though!
My favorite board game (this is going to firmly cement my reputation as a big time nerd) is Risk. I am constantly on the prowl for someone to play this game with me. I rarely succeed in finding anyone willing to play, but when I do….hours and hours of geeky world dominating fun!

Nat!
The good Dr was a Monopoly freak as a kid . . . and have to brag that to date – haven’t lost a game – so I guess I should hook up with your family – mind you, there could be blood spilt.
That said – it really is a roll of the dice when it comes to doing well isn’t it . . . ?
Risk? I’ll have to do a search for that one.
I also really enjoyed Masterpiece and Cluedo as a kid – but had to go round to a mates place – cause he had all the good stuff.
Oh for rainy days and childhood memories sometimes huh

I love Scrabble and Upwords which is a similar concept. I played Electronic Monopoly awile back where you use ‘credit cards’ in an EFT type machine, my how times change. It was fun but very hard for the banker to keep pace.
The one game I hate with a passion is Pictionary. I just can’t think fast enough for that one.

Wow – electronic Monopoly – there’s one for technology – though I suspect it’s been around for 20 years and I just haven’t caught up
As for Pictionary – it’s frustrating – but I love it. Daughter no.1 and I excel when we play together – we are on exactly the same wavelenght – it’s scary. Hence these days – we aren’t allowed to tag team with the family get together.
Do’h . . .

Have you ever played Taboo? The one where you work in teams and you have cards with words that you can’t say to describe another word? Now THAT is a fun game!

I have always been a sort of a board game fanatic lol. One of my facorite trivia categories to write for my online trivia games is a board game category. They always complain cause i usually manage to make the questions too hard.
I think I like all the games mentioned thus far, except for Mousetrap, it annoyed me. Also never heard of Masterpiece, at least i don’t think I have. Cluedo over here is just Clue. Loved it, and the movie it spawned.
For awhile me and a few friends were playing Pictionary online through Yahoo games. It was very fun. I was famous for drawing things like a “stick horse”, “stick dog” and such.
My all-time favorites were lesser-known ones. Stop Thief! and (a game that has Risk topped by leaps and bounds in geekiness) Ubi . I am sure no one has ever heard of them – unless they heard of them from me. lol
For months now my wife and I have been getting together with my in-laws for family game night. We play a couple different variations of Cranium, and Partini. Both exceptionally fun games.

Trivial pursuit has to go onto the list as well.
Without going into it too much – won a tidy little sum on a TV gameshow over here a couple of years back – and can put it down to years of frivilous knowledge games just like it . . .
BTW – would kids even know what snakes and ladders or Chinese checkers was these days?

You’re my hero, Doc! You were on a gameshow?!?! Awesome!
I love Trivial Pursuit as well. It is another game I can’t find anyone to play with me
Never heard of celebrity head, but if it is about celeb knowledge, I’d probably be good at it.
Now I want to play board games!
Hey, what time is your show on? I totally plan to catch it this week!

Hey Nat.
No hero status here! But it was an excellent hourly rate when I worked it out – will tell you about it one day if you like.
Celebrity head is a game where each person wears something similar to a head-band with the name of a celebrity on it – so only the other players can see. You ask each other questions about who you think you might be (the name you’re wearing on your headband that you can’t see of course) – the first person to guess who they are wins that round. Sounds complicated but is very simple.
Show is on 7-10 tonight Sydney time. You can catch in on the web – http://www.hawkesburyradio.com.au
Let you in on a secret . . . Morgan has a little part to play on the programme too – just after 7.30.
Hope you like your 70s and 80s music.
Make sure you leave a lovely warm comment on the guestbook page at hawkesburyradio.com.au for the Musicguy too . . .
